Tales of supernatural beings consuming the blood or flesh of the living have been associated with some kind of revenant, demon, spirit or deity in nearly every culture around the world for centuries back to prehistoric times.Today, we call them vampires, but in ancient times, the term vampire did not exist. Even the Devil was synonymous with the vampire. However, it is Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula that is remembered as the quintessential vampire novel and which provided the basis of modern vampire fiction. The emphasis upon the evils of carnal sexuality and lust-driven behaviors in Dracula were shocking to Victorian society, but behind closed doors, they enjoyed the book anyway. According to literary historians, the novel has become more significant for modern readers than it was for contemporary Victorian readers, most of whom enjoyed it just as a good adventure story (so they said). I daresay, those repressed Victorians loved a sexy vampire just as much as we do. Dracula reached its broad iconic legendary classic status later in the 20th century when the movie versions appeared. Vampires have become iconic in pop culture. We have embraced the unknown.
