These thistles average a height of 5 to 8 feet tall and a spread of about 5 feet. They are loaded with purple flowers {think Braveheart}. Pollinators absolutely love them. I've seen 2 Humble Bumble Bees on 1 flower!!. They aren't called thistles for nothing. They are very prickly but I use this to my advantage. It keeps animals out OR in and humans don't dare to trespass through a fence of these. They essentially take care of themselves, require no particular soil, and have multiple advantages. The only things you will have to do: 1} Water if there is an extended drought. 2} Wear gloves when taking off seed heads which is a must unless you want your lawn spotted with them. 3} they love the sun.
They also make a wonderful flower arrangement. My favorite part is protection from animals defecating on my lawn and keeping most any unwanted "beings" on my property out while adding beauty too.
