USS Independence (CV62) Gold Plated Challenge / Tribute Coin
(Sorry about the condition of the pics, I did the best I could with what I have. The first pic is from the website I bought this from just to show detail. But it is the exact coin the winner will receive.)
Size:1 3/5inch (40mm) round challenge coin Weight: 1 ounce Color: Alloy – Gold Plated Condition: BNIP – unused, comes in a plastic coin capsule.
This coin is absolutely beautiful! On the front a beautiful picture of the Aircraft carrier, The USS Independence. On the Back – across the top is: “Department Of The Navy” and across the bottom is: “United States Of America”. With the seal of the US Navy in the middle.
The fifth USS Independence (CV/CVA-62) is a Forrestal-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. She was the fourth and final member of the Forrestal class of conventionally powered supercarriers. She entered service in 1959, with much of her early years spent in the Mediterranean Fleet.
Independence made a single tour off the coast of Vietnam in 1965 during the Vietnam War, and also carried out airstrikes against Syrian forces during the Lebanese Civil War and operations over Iraq during Operation Southern Watch, the enforcement of the no-fly zone over southern Iraq.
Independence was decommissioned in 1998 after 39 years of active service
