opals are very fragile stones to begin with. and they can not get wet. so remember this if you win, take off when washing hands and showering or doing dishes etc. if you do this it will last a lifetime,

it depends on the stone, its not necessarely getting them wet, its the temperature of the water, going from hot to cold will make them split and crack and sometimes crumble. so i say dont get them wet because i go from hot to cold all the time washing dishes. so just be careful with fast changing temperatures from hot to cold or cold to hot.
