The listing, Victorian Pompeii Souvenir 1898 has ended.
Another odd curiosity for my fellow Listians. Volcanic rock (fist sized)stamped with an image on both sides. I'm thinking it's a Victorian era souvenir and in all the years I've had it I've never come across another like it. The city of Pompeii started to be unvovered in the 1700s, but iy wasn't until the late 19th century that Archaeology became more than a treasure hunt but also a reputable science. I imagine during the Victorian period, Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius drew quite a bit of tourism as it still does today. But back then new discoveries were still a daily occurrence. Perhaps a vivtorian traveler purchased it from a local or maybe it was given to investors who helped fund the research at Pompeii. It's an interesting piece, whether displayed on a shelf or as a paper weight perhaps. Appealing to Antiquarians, collectors, and rock hounds alike. As always FREE SHIPPING IN THE U.S. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this does. I've had it for years and it's time to pass it on to someone else to appreciate it. Perhaps one of you will be able to dig up some more info on this curious memento.
