Description

The listing, RARE 1989 FLEER #616 BILL RIPKEN F*** FACE CARD, BUT THIS IS A TEST CARD, MUST HAVE AN SEE l@@k has ended.

When this card came out in 1989 there was a big ta do, because of what was on the knob of the bat. f, face, fleer did several things to correct the problem. but here is rare b&w test card that made it pass fleer, looks like the test was produced in 1988 going by the back of it but i am not sure, if they dated them that way,

not many out there,

listia rules prevail over this auction,,,,,,,,,,,

If I may say so- This card is one of the most interesting items I have seen on Listia in a while. However, the card is not a card from Fleer. This card was produced on the East Coast by a counterfeit expert. Back in 1988 when the regular issue of this card surfaced the amounts the card was getting at shows was astronomical. Some of the rare versions were commanding 4 figures at shows. That being said, while that was going on, a group on the east coast came out with this, "The 1988 Test Run version". I can provide some evidence and sources verifying my story- A simple search of that other auction site will show that the only 1989 Fleer "1988 Test Run" cards are of Billy Ripken. This proves that the only "Test Run" card is of Billy Ripken. Why would Fleer only do a test run of this card? The original guys selling this for a quick buck wanted people to think there was a test run of all players in the set. Not the case. Also, this card will not be graded by the "big 4" grading companies. That being said, there is a market for this card and it is a very interesting piece. I am certainly not trying to sandbag your auction. Just providing some information from a guy who has spent his life in cards. I perhaps may even bid on it. -Jace

The card is the 1989 Fleer set design, but the original poser was correct. This was a East Coast counterfeit to prey on the insanity that took place in the late 80s and early 90s. I actually used this card (along with the original) in printing seminars to show the importance of proofing. And the first poster is correct, the original card was selling for up to $1200-1500 in some markets. I personally saw the card sell for $900 at a card show in St. Louis. As a printing consultant, this duplicate confirmed to me personally that this card was not "accidentally" printed, but whoever was in charge of final design, along with the head press technician allow this card to slip through. By 1989, the market was getting SO flooded, you needed a catch to keep sales up, and what better way than a controversial card of moral consequence. If the original card REALLY interests you, do your research and talk to collectors who would have been in their early 20s on up. Looking back (I was 22 when the original card was printed) it was a crazy time.

There's also another error in the 89 tower set...Randy Johnson's rookie...behind him..there was a huge Marlboro sign...very few made them to packs before it was caught...the blacked out version is the most notable of them...as for your card...I've only seen one other..but always heard they were reproductions as well....but that doesn't mean there's no value..nice auction.

The regular card versions have different variations, but all of the test proof cards have the f face on it before they decided which variations they could do on the base cards

But the test cards ff got by qt, and in turn some of the regular issue made into packs, right? when they caught it they did about 6 variations to remove the funny face

Although this one isn't a legitimate one, it was produced like the one poster said. The hysteria was amazing. There is the f face, a white out version, a black scribble version, a small black box version, a large black box version. Fleer even started cutting a line in the card to remove the f face...
