In response to a PM: If I win this, will you be around to help if I have questions?

Usually I'm around and will respond right away, but sometimes not "in the moment."

Overall, people, once you know what to expect this fabulous little unit to do, you'll love it as much as I love mine. You just have to understand its limitations and not expect it to be a 'real' laptop. Although, I must say, it comes darn close...

In response to a PM re: usb drives. Yes, I have found some don't work. Most likely it's because it has a regular Windows driver. Even after formatting, I still couldn't get some to work BUT (this is a biggie) for some crazy reason, it has NO PROBLEM with Lexar usb drives. Not one hitch with those. And it sees ALL brands of my sd cards.

In response to a PM: NO, it will NOT recognize my external usb cd/dvd drive. It MIGHT if I found one made for Linux but I'm just guessing.

In response to a PM re: how to determine what programs will run on it.

Google WinCE and you'll find a whole bunch of free software BUT you are looking for files for ARM. Not all WinCE files will work. For example, those ending in .ppc will not work. Those are strictly for handhelds. So you need to really look at those file extensions.

In response to a PM: Emulators. No, it won't run a Windows emulator but it WILL run Puppy Linux off a usb stick. The trick is to get into the bios and make it start up to the usb drive FIRST. Those explanations on how to fix the bios are on the web through a Google search.

In addition, to answer all the other PM's re: Windows applications and peripherals, here the deal:

If anything is made for 'regular Windows,' it will not run. Not drivers, not external keyboards with Windows-based drivers, not many external mice (I do have one that was made for Linux that does run).

ONLY WINDOWS CE/ARM stuff will run. Period. Well, of course, you're going to use Puppy.

In response to a PM re: External Monitor.

Ya know, I read somewhere it can be done but I forget the particulars. Google it since I haven't tried it and don't need or want to try it.

Oh, this one's funny: Why are you doing this for someone else's auction?

Answer: because I'm a tech, webmaster, and am a thorough-bred geek and like to help others.

AND, because I love my mini netbook like this one so much :-) AND, because the seller is a mommy and fairly new and I enjoy helping others when I can.

Response to a PM: Will it play audio books?

Yes, I think it can. I think you can download a mobile app from audiobooks.com or something like that. I'll see what I can do to test that since I have some on my Kindle I can transfer. My guess is that Windows Media Player is going to pop up and play it (and I think audio books ----owned by Amazon) has Windows Media Player versions you could download to a usb stick.

You want to download the audio books you're purchased as mp3's. So, definitely, yes, it will play audio books.

In response to a PM: Dell Axim X5 files: yes, those programs will run on this because that version of a Dell Axim is WindowsCE/ARM unless it's been upgraded to mobile.

That was a great question! Well, they're all good, actually, but I recently transferred my own old AXIM files to my Lexar (11 GB) drive and they're all working.

Now an HP, or Ipaq and other mobile files may or may not work. Again, look at the extension. ARM files always work and others may be 'hit and miss.' NOT ALL SMARTPHONE OR MOBILE APPS WILL RUN. In fact, those made for most handhelds or smartphones DO NOT work. You might be able to get them to work if you found a WinCE/ARM app to run them.

In response to a PM re: YouTube. Okay, I tried again to get YouTube to 'act right' and here's what happens:

I get to the page just fine and see all the videos listed that I searched for under 'needle tatting.'

When I click on "Watch Video," Windows Media Player 9 opens up, tries to locate the server, then says it can't find it. I think if I put on a different media player for Windows CE/ARM, it will run. I'm thinking because it can't find the 'file path' that it's a Windows Media Player issue...???

OH, HOLY COW. I just re-realized how large audio book files are. BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD THEM TO A LARGE USB STICK OR THUMB DRIVE!

REMEMBER: THE BASE CORE OF THIS SYSTEM IS ONLY 2 GIGABYTES! Get as large of Lexar (recommended and they're on eBay and I've seen a few on Listia---even as small as 2-4 gigabytes) as you can! Run your apps, too, as much as you can from sd or usb drive.

In response to a PM: How big are program files for this? How much can I really fit on a USB disk or sd card?

Answer: WinCE/ARM files are VERY, VERY small. For example, it's version of Wordpad is only 13.5 megabytes. Very, very tiny. The average is around 8 megabytes per app. So, you could conceivably really do A LOT on this unit, depending on the size of the sd card and usb thumb drive sizes.

OH, re: running programs.

Okay, on mine I can only have a couple of apps open at a time because it has 128mb ram.

The one listed here has DOUBLE that ram (memory) at 256mb. I think that's why she paid more it than they usually sell for. Her hard drive is also twice as fast as mine.

That should give you some indication of how it will run: If I LOVE my 'lesser' one, the winner of this one will be ecstatic!

No more PM's, okay? I think I/we have about covered everything. Please direct any further questions to the seller. If she can't answer it, I'll try to. What we've wound up with on this auction are two pages of 'description' and it's now down to things like shipping, etc. specifically to her.

Plus, a lot of you aren't reading through the posts and are repeating the same questions. My email looks like I haven't answered email for 2 months! I'm sure you can identify!

Thanks!

out of curiosity, if you had this computer for two weeks, why didn't you just return it and get your $150 back?
Oct 14th, 2011 at 10:42:25 AM PDT by

I got it of ebay, they excepted returns up to 2 weeks I think it was, but since I ordered it from china and it was $50 shipping that I would have to pay to get a $100 refund, seemed kinda pointless to me
