HA~ I finally got a new sewing machine and I have extra packs of SCHMETZ brand needles! NEW today from JANKE'S sewing machine store here. Regular size ~ fits most all makes of machines machines ~ mine is Necchi.
These are the most common used needles for most materials & sewing machines..common to homes

OK~ I don't know much about needles..the store man gave me these as I told him I would be sewing cottons & stretchy denim.
If what you are asking is referring to the top part that is inserted to hold the needle tightly, one of the needle side is flat (backside) & the rest of it is round.. whops now everyone knows that I really don't know sewing things & terms.
