The listing, Antique Victorian Mourning or Remembrance Button / Pin Sweet Baby Boy has ended.
Up for consideration is a Victorian mourning button that would have been worn by the child's loved ones after he died. As an expression of their grief, the Victorian people often wore mourning jewelry. This jewelry ranged from simple photo buttons like the one here, to very elaborate rings and other pieces with gold and gemstones. One other item often incorporated into mourning jewelry was human hair--the hair of the deceased. I will be listing a small pendant with hair next week. I am totally fascinated with the Victorian treatment of their deceased loved ones. I will be listing some other items over the next few months.
Anyway, this auction is for a button/pin with the photo of a baby boy--at least I think it's a boy. The simple button frame is set into a nicer twisted metal brass frame. It looks like there is some rust on the back of the pin, but the photo is just fine. It measures 1" across, and it is quite wearable. It is possible that this was a remembrance button where the baby wasn't dead but perhaps Papa was going away for a while and wanted to take a small photo along with him. I can't tell just by looking at which type of button this was, but the child mortality rate was very high in the 1800s. My guess is thst this was a mourning pin.
