WELCOME TO MY SEPTEMBER AUCTIONS! ONE MORE TIME!!!

Here we have a most beautiful plant to behold & It's time to reap the benefits of this years sowing efforts. I got a pretty good crop of seeds this year!

The Red Bird of Paradise is an evergreen shrub that enjoys full sun and has bright yellow flowers, with orange and red centers that grow out of long, thin stalks. The leaves are ferny-looking. The orange and yellow flowers of the Red Bird of Paradise makes a very stunning bush.

The Red Bird of Paradise is a fairly fast grower, and can get large, so periodic trimming is suggested. Red Bird of Paradise will do well in ANY soil, but the better drainage you have the healthier the plant will be. I cut mine back in the winter, since they don't take the frosty nights well, but they always come back strong and healthy.

Questions & Comments
Original
Photos shown are not for "red bird of paradise" aka caesalpinia pulcherrium ... which has red flowers with yellow sex parts and appears to be orange when viewed from a distance. It is the national flower of the Caribbean nation, Barbados and The Turks (might be off on "Turks") ... hence it's more common name, "Pride Of Barbados."

Rather, these photos are of a cousin in its genus, C. Mexicana aka "yellow bird of paradise", it's sexy bits are red (as in your photos) and the flower petals are bright yellow (ditto).

Btw, there is also "desert bird of paradise", another cousin, C. Gillespie -- named after botanist who first studied it's foam and biology... has paler yellow flowers, though nowhere near a pastel, and it's sexy bits are a mix of bright yellow and bright red.

The seed pods and seeds themselves are very similar among all three species of the genus Caesalpinia. It is extremely easy, even for long-time gardeners to discriminate which is which ... Confusion can enter the mix, just for the heck of it when there is any cross-pollination happening !

Therefore it is entirely possible for something beyond your control to mix up seeds from the pictured variety with one of its cousins. One tip is that the Pride of Barbados (AKA red bird of paradise) is not as drought tolerant as its yellow cousins -- they're desert plants afterall. And, though it is indigenous to a sub-tropical-to-tropically humid area of the northern coast os So. America, it does great here in So. Central TX (Austin) ... whether our year is wet or very dry.

TJI : Hereabouts, a couple of nurseries sell them as Pride Of Austin" partly because from afar they appear orange - and we bleed burnt orange hereabouts.
