**** 20 Granny Smith Apple Seeds ****

Growing your own apples is well worth the effort since they are expensive to buy.

They have a wonderful combination of tart and sweet flavor to them, and take longer to become mealy than their red counterparts!

Growing instructions:

Apple seeds can be tricky to start, as on average, only 30% of your seeds will germinate.

1) wrap seeds in a damp paper towel and put into a sealed ziplock plastic bag and put into the refrigerator.
(Seeds take about a month to germinate, but check them ever few weeks and if needed moisten the paper towels again).

2) Seeds will be ready to plant when you see white sprouts coming out the pointy end. Plant seeds 1-2 inches deep in a pot filled with compost.

3) In order to ensure your trees will produce apples they must be grafted. Wait until your apple trees are about 1-2 feet high before you do this.

There are many different methods of grafting apple trees but the "Whip and Tongue" graft is thought to work best.

A) Get a piece of wood (Scion wood) from the variety of apple you want.

B) Next, cut down at an angle on wood.

C) Then make an identical cut on the apple tree.
Next, cut downwards on the sliced wood. Do this on both tree and scion wood (the stick at the top).

D) Then push together and wrap with cling wrap and then masking tape.

Granny Smith Apples are best grown in zones 5-9.

Happy Planting!

Would we already have to have a Granny Smith to graft to the seedling from the seeds we would be getting? If so we wouldn't really be getting a Granny Smith apple tree from these seeds. Your description on how to grow says these seed will be root stock for grafting only.

It's possible without grafting but not a sure thing. I got two trees from Home Depot that cross pollinated each other and the fruit came pretty close to what you get in the store but they weren't exactly the same.

To be sure that you'll get apples that are true to form it's best if you grow the seeds into trees and then get scion wood from suckers or branches that came from another Granny Smith and graft that onto one of the branches of these seedlings.

Here's one place that offers Granny Smith Scion Wood; http://www.thundermountain.net.nz/Scionwood-and-Rootstock/

These are expensive apples at the grocery store, so why not grow your own and save alot in the long-term! It's worth the extra effort and if done right you'll be rewarded for years to come. This planting project is a fun activity you can do with your kids.
