this has the option of either using the old school big jack or the more common 3.5 correct? also how long is the cord?

Yes; I have put up two pictures showing both options for jacks. The cord seems to stretch to at least 5-6 feet.

How clear is the sound and how loud can it get? Also does it hurt your ears if you wear them too long?

Because these are questions of personal preference I am not sure. They did not bother me, and I feel that one can zone out if they put the volume up to the max.
