The listing, Antique Victorian Mourning Locket Pendant with Human Hair has ended.
I promised in one of my auctions last week that I would be listing a Victorian mourning locket that contains human hair and here it is. :) This is a small mourning locket, perhaps worn as a pendant or attached to a watch fob. It is made of metal, unmarked but most likely gold filled, and glass. There is woven hair inside and it was embellished with some black enamel which was often used to accent pieces of mourning jewelry.
Hair was used in rings, lockets, bracelets and brooches. Sometimes it was a simple lock tucked away, or the hair was so finely woven by hand that it looks like it must have been done by machine. Hair was also woven into flowers and other designs and then framed under glass. Since the hair did not deteriorate, it was the perfect way to keep a part of someone with you and to remember them always.
This little locket is small, about the size of a dime. There is an engraved monogram, but I can only make out the "L". It is in very good antique condition, but there is some scuffing to the glass--see the second to last photo. The hair is still very visible. The attached jump ring is hand made.
This is a lovely piece of Victorian mourning jewelry. Please post comments and ask me questions about it. Shipping is free, and a Listia verified address is required. Thanks so much for viewing my auction!
