Throughout the years American history has had many heroes, but none have been as overlooked as the Buffalo Soldiers. Serving on the Great Plains and Southern Plains of the West for more than 20 years, these courageous men proved invaluable in America’s development.

Organized in 1866 after the Civil War, the 9th & 10th cavalry units and the 24th & 25th infantry units were comprised entirely of black soldiers - the first to serve in a peacetime army. Overcoming numerous obstacles, including extreme discrimination and inferior uniforms, military equipment, and horses, the Buffalo Soldiers developed into remarkable fighting units.

Patrolling over 7.5 million square acres they strove to make life secure on the strife-ridden frontier of the American West, fighting not only Native Americans, but also cattle thieves, bootleggers, and Mexican revolutionaries. Paving the way for settlers heading west, they also surveyed the land, built railroads, forts, towns, and roads, and escorted stagecoaches and wagon trains.

Often as difficult to bring down in a fight as the hard-charging buffalo, the men were dubbed “Buffalo Soldiers” by their Native American opponents - a title they wore with pride. Issued to honor the Buffalo Soldiers, this stamp adds a new dimension to our nation’s history.
