Description

The listing, Brownish Red Tomato - 20 seeds has ended.

These are a 3rd generation grow out, of a tomato called African Brown.

I believe it might be a cross between 2nd generation African Brown, and a red tomato.

The original African Brown, was smaller, rounder, browner, with an indent on the blossom end.

Regardless, they're still edible.

So, there might be some variability in fruit color and shape.

These are great to grow out to eat, not so great for seed saving.

Taste is relative to individuals. I just diced them up & put them in soup.

But the African Brown parent, was not acidic at all, and the other parent which I believe to be Early Girl (the only big red tomato I grew the same year as African Brown) has a traditional taste.

I love growing tomatoes, but was never a fresh tomato eater.

I grew up only thinking tomatoes were just round, red, and not very good.

Then I found out that there are really about 4 THOUSAND varieties out in the world!

But still, I just mainly use them diced for soup. The soup is seasoned to taste, so I rarely just taste them by themselves. I did taste African Brown, and there was no acidity at all. However, a "traditional" tomato lover didn't like African Brown, because it tasted different than a traditional tomato (no acid or tang).

Being a cross with a traditional tasting tomato, I'm sure that added what the African Brown seemed to be lacking.

I want to eventually grow paste types and make paste and sauces, but haven't done that yet. I tried to Grow a paste type (Andes Horn) this year, but it failed.

I'm going to try and grow it again next year.
