Description

The listing, Lieutenant General U.S. Grant,Ulysses S. Grant,American Civil War,c1864,Military has ended.

This is a very small tintype that i found between the covers of a sweet old velvet album. The back of the photo has a woman ~ i cannot tell if it's Grant's wife, Julia..but most likely it is.
In my Tin of photos i found a single frame that was unused...it fits over U.S.Grant's photograph. I will send it along with Grant's tintype and the winner can use it as they wish. I did think that it was kind of nice that the bottom side of the frame is missing; as if it indeed is Julia on the other side, it would be nice to see the handsome couple!
The small white tintype measures just under 2 inches; if the frame were used it would be about 21/2" by 3 inches. (Approximately)
What i find rare about this tintype is that i have seen Grant looking slightly to the left, only a couple of times...he most always is facing to the right . Julia's' pose is rare as well; she always had her portraits done in profile. Later on when she was First Lady, she mentioned having the corrective surgery for her eyes ~ but Grant said no..he liked her that way.

Would you include both frames?
Oct 30th, 2015 at 5:30:01 PM PDT by
Original
Yes..the front frame (that is on the first photo) i had just laid it over the sleeve; but i found an extra back frame that holds it into position. I like it better that way...it looks "finished" i think..So i'd send it that way...and then you could decide what you wanted to do.

Is the photo of Grant a tin type too? Or a print? Watching all your wonderful auctions!

It's a tintype..right on the edge of the paper you can see the bright metal and it's very stiff...i think it is a tintype...i don't know enough about these things to be certain.. Thank you for watching!!!
