Description
The listing, Quadruple plate Corset lacer ~ Victorian Era has ended.
.Quadruple silverplate hollowware was some of the highest quality made during the later part of the 19th century. Instead of 2 troy ounces," Quadruple" Silverplate used 8 troy ounces of silver to plate the item. Since the change from crafting wares of pewter(the "poor mans silver )to electroplated silver occurred at the height of the Victorian Era. Not only are the silver-plated items ornamented with elaborate victorian details, but they are often embellished with florid engraved decoration. Details that are no longer used!
I think you have this off a bit... could this be art nouveau a bit earlier than Victoria? also could it not be a shoe lacer? Its gorgeous but I think the style is not Victorian but Art Nouveau but this overlapped into the Victorian era but is not in the style of Victoria. Just my take on it...
I think it's a corset lacer, but i suppose i could be wrong. About the Art Nouveau,,i could be mistaken on that as well...most of the items i have are from the Victorian era, I'm unsure...good thinking tho!
It probably is from about the first 25 years of the 20th century is say, just prior to the art deco fad. But you are right, glove lacers were often full silver as it his more malleable and not faced with the force of corsets. As time went by, corsets were of course less tight or worn as undergarments instead of virtually body modifications! So I do believe, yes corset lacer. Glove and strictly boot lacers were often kept in purses so to have a large chunky handle on it wouldn't be size wise for a purse. :-)
Yay! I really love to share things like this...i've had her for all my life and i'd like for someone else to have her. I like to share history you know... xxx
I believe this is an art nouveau piece to use for shoes and gloves! I have hat pins in this design, I would love to own this! Thanks for listing quality items!
Its absolutely a corset lacer, poorer women often used them to lace "short boots" too but this design was obviously owned by a well to do lady. The thickened decorative handle was an early attempt at an "ergonomic" grip, which helped when pulling corsets so tight. Servants and dressers often had calluses between thumb and forefinger and across their palms from the grip and friction of the metal hooks. If u ever wanna know anything about fashion, medieval to early20th century, I'm an unofficial historian lol, I've written blurbs for a few fashion mags overseas tho and this is one of the cooler hooks I have ever seen. At auction this should fetch upwards of $300 to the right audience. If silver plated then, as much as $450 I'd say. bidders, don't be stingy! This is a deal!
Ahh, Thank you so much!! I really was quite certain that this was a corset lacer. It's Quadruple silver plate, and very soft. I thought that it would be more gentle on ones skin. The Boot lacers i've had are just a little "coarser". Thank you so very much for your comment ...so helpful!
