The listing, SUEDWEST AFRIKA MEDAL 1904-1906 has ended.
'Südwest Afrika Denkmünze' 1904-06 bronze medal (Den Siegreichen Streitern Südwest Afrika 1904-1906). The medal was instituted on 19 March 1907 by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The medal was awarded for participation in the suppression of the riots in German South West Africa (now Nambia). The medal comes without ribbon. Nice example in good used condition!
Thank you...my dad was in the war from '39-'45 and he brought all manner of things home. This medal is really in amazing condition....iwas worried that folks may get upset about this, but War is history.
October of 1903 witnessed the beginning of what was to be a lengthy, tiresome and expensive colonial war for Germany. It was to prove expensive not only in money it cost Germany some R60,000,000 but also in men, for she was to suffer two thousand military casualties. The underlying cause of the war was the fear on the part of the indigenous people of South West Africa that the persistent endeavors of the German colonists to acquire possession of tribal lands for the increasing number of German immigrants, would rob them of their traditional unrestricted grazing rights. Smoldering resentment erupted into fiery rebellion in October 1903 in the extreme south in the region occupied by the Bondelswart Nama. I really wish i could add the photo i just took..I never ever noticed the Eagle beside the soldier's head! Those are the raptors wings over his helmet? Darn...i have such a better photo...it's very "raised up" (the emblem)
