all-around athletic career at UCLA,Jackie began his pro baseball career with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues in '45. After that season,Branch Rickey signed him for the Dodgers and sent him to
Class-AAA Montreal,where he hit .349 in '46 to prepare for his Major League debut,which would come in '47.
