I don't know much about SSD.. all I know is their basically a different type of hard drive, right? Can you tell me anything about SSD if that's not to much trouble?
and is it 16GB or was that a typo? Just wondering because it's an odd number.

Like the comment below, SSD is Solid State Drive, it operates faster then a Hard Drive.

The kind of wear I'm talking about won't show up in a stress test. The engineering manager at Patriot, Saeed Arash Far, reported that Windows 98 will kill one of their SSD drives in less than a year. XP and Windows 7 have better wear leveling, but still, over time the OS demands of indexing and defragmenting (which you shouldn't do on an SSD at all) are going to have a marked effect, since writing to solid state physically wears out the drive. The next gen of SSD drives are an improvement, but the technology is still evolving.

The CR-48 is a great little machine, it really is. All I was suggesting was that it would be a good idea to stay with the OS this netbook was designed for, for maximum lifespan and performance.

Good luck with your auction! I actually always wanted one of these to play with.

Okay thanks so much! If someone still wants windows 7, I'll still include it. I know someone on a forum who has windows 7 on one, and It's lasted since it came out! With no physical notice of wear, as of yet!

SSD is "solid state drive"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive

Truthfully, you probably shouldn't install Windows on an SSD. That drive design wasn't meant for use with an operating system that has to do so much "seeking" during normal operation, and most solid state disks will fail within 12-18 months if you put them under so much intense pressure. The CR-48, like this one above, was physically engineered to be a cloud machine, and is specially designed to run Chrome OS, or one of the very light Linux variants (like Mint).

(former computer engineer, offering my experience only...)

True about the Cloud Machine, although Windows would not kill the SSD in 12-18 months. I put this SSD through stress tests, and windows 7 runs very clean on it. Most Gaming machines use SSD for Windows 7 Installs now a days anyway! take a look!

Thanks for the comment though!

if the battery is long lasting why then do you only get 8 hrs. on it? Is the battery rechargeable?
+1
Oct 25th, 2011 at 8:51:26 AM PDT by

It means 8hrs continuous use. You can use it roughly 8 hours on one battery charge without it being plugged in. The battery is rechargeable, and can be used while its plugged in.
