It is not a portable charger. It is design to give you multiple outlets and usb ports to charge/power up your devices. Lets say you are traveling and the room you are in only has one power outlet, you have a laptop, cell phone and camera. Use this adapter to plug into outlet, now you have the ability to plug your laptop, cell phone and camera and charge all three at the same time, and still have extra place to plug other device if you choose to. With out you would be only be able to charge two of the devices. It is not a back up charger, just give you three ac outlets and two usb charging ports once plugged into the wall.

so is this a portable outlet/charger for things like laptops, fans, phones,etc.? How long does it hold charge?

I use mine for my laptop and cell phone and tablet charger, as well a my monitor I have at my desk. The room I am in only has two ac outlets and they are on opposite sides of the room. This allows me to power everything up with out extension cords across the room. It is actually very convenient.
