Marigold is in this family of plants, although calendula and marigold have some slight differences in uses.
Actions: a non-tannin astringent, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, local tissue healer.
What this all means is that Calendula has some great uses (below you will find some recipes).
Astringent: or cleaner. A solution of water and the herb or flowers is used to treat small wounds, cuts and bruises.
Anti-inflammatory: to reduce swellings apply a solution or ointment of calendula. Do not use on burns.
Antispasmodic: Actually some of the current seizer medications have calendula in them. I do not suggest that a patient with epilepsy or turrets stop taking their meds and change to this herb, but as an additive to prescribed medications it has been known to show great results. Be sure to tell your Doctor that you are on this herb.
Local tissue healer: again this is a solution or ointment applied to small bruises, cuts and scrapes, will not only help clean but heal faster and even has some anti-bacterial qualities.
Calendula Ointment:
Ingredients: Calendula flowers and water.
Put a handful of calendula flowers into a pot of one quart of water. Boil it down by half on high, then turn it down to a simmer and boil down by half again. Let it cool and then strain. Put remaining liquid into a jar and apply with cotton onto effected area.
