It emits a sound that is irritating to dogs. Not harmful at all. Will not hurt a dog in any way. It is inaudible to humans. It is used by joggers, mailmen,walkers,etc...Helps control digging through trash and flower beds. Keeps them off furniture that you do not want them on. Basically, it is used to train a dog and control it's behavior. I hope this info helps.
