DOWNTOWN TRAIN takes on the seemingly impossible task of representing some of Rod Stewart's best on one CD. And the job is admirably done, with samplings of every stage of Stewart's lengthy, widely-varied career. Each track is a testament to Stewart's importance within his time--he has come to define so many different sounds that each track on the album is a trip to a another distinct era.

DOWNTOWN TRAIN moves from the bare-faced bravado of the opener "Stay With Me" to the once-sensational "The Killing Of Georgie," the tender narrative centered around a fatal gay-bashing. Stewart's embrace of recording technology bursts into view with the discofied throb of "Passion," reaching a peak with the squeaky-clean, synth-driven anthem "Young Turks." Stewart's gift with a cover is handily displayed with the tender, slow pulse he gives his modern-sounding take on "People Get Ready," and on the album's four closing cuts, most notably the Tom Waits-penned title tune.

My mom bought my first album for me - it was Rod's "Every Picture Tells a Story", with "Maggie May" and "Mandolin Wind" - always loved a good mandolin. Ron Wood was still with him then, before he left and joined up with The Rolling Stones. I saw Rod in concert once, but it was around the time of his hit song "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" - he was wearing a red and white striped jumpsuit and looked like a candy cane. lol I wanted the old Rod back, but that was just sentimentality on my part - it was still a good concert. I like the things he's done in more recent years, too. Thanks for offering this one to bid on, too. I'm bidding on several of your auctions and I think my husband is, too - I know he added you as a favorite - his name is BadDog2 here. If we get lucky and win more than one auction, you can combine shipping if it's less hassle and less expensive for you to do so, even if it means waiting a few extra days until the auctions we're bidding on are done.
