I'm not sure you can break even, other than winning things that are worth more (to you) than the cost of shipping your items out free. You could try to win things of value you can re-sell, but that is difficult, and is why so many people are giving things away for free. For example, gold can be turned in for cash, but one little necklace or bracelet isn't worth that much. My feeling is that I come out ahead because I've won things that would have cost me a LOT and that I wouldn't normally buy (Ipods, I won the Dell mini computer, a Tivo, and some very nice jewelry).

So, I feel your pain, I spend a few hundred $$$ a month on free shipping, and when I can't find things I want to bid on I get a little discouraged about it. Kinda getting burned out too, and might take some time off for the summer, get back into it in the Fall. Summer's a crappy time for online sales anyway ...

I try to do half and half and when I do charge shipping its usually 1 or 2 $, and you're right there isnt too much to bid on right now, unless you have 10,000 or more credits.

Sorry to drone on and one ... good luck with this auction, it looks like a nice camera! Have you tried to take detailed small photos for Listia with it? I think a LOT of people need a camera that can do that .... would be helpful to know. The camera I've got on Listia is perfect for that, and I'm getting a ton of bids on it (I'm also offering free shipping, even though I know it will cost me $5).

I agree that with a flat-rate box, the medium size is what you'd need. Shipping is a fairly complicated subject, but as you do it you learn more about it. Used to be the minimum Priority rate applied to anything up to TWO pounds, now it's ONE pound and those small-sized flat rate boxes are rediculously small. But in the medium and large sizes, they have multiple choices of box sizes and shapes ... not too sure about the small ones. So, for a smallish item that wont' fit in the small flat-rate box, it's usually cheaper than $10 to ship by weight, but if it's over a pound it also depends on the zip codes you are shipping to and from (not a lot more, but will cost the least if you are shipping to someone in your same postal "zone.")

Anyway, just trying to save you and your winning bidder a few dollars. If they want it insured though, that will cost a minimum $2 more (used to be $1) and let me tell you the post office will NEVER pay out on insurance ... so buy it, but IMO you are just throwing away money ... delivery confirmation is all you really need, which is free if you buy your Priority shipping online.

I wish I could ship everything free and mostly all of the items I list are free shipping. And yep there are a lot of people that won't bid unless it's free shipping. That actually has limited some of the things that I would like to give on here I would have to use the medium or large flat rates, but I just can't afford that. I don't work and as it is now what I do offer cost me any where's from $1.22 to $2.00 to ship 'em! and I list a lot of things! I'm trying to figure out how to break even on here? I have re-listed a couple of things because I didn't really like them once I received them. But usually get close to the same credits that it cost me.

I gotta say though, I've gotten a LOT of mega bargains on Listia because the shipping was not free. For $2 I can often win an item for under 200 credits and turn around and sell it for a couple thousand credits. So, I don't complain too much about it! LOL

Now how did you do that? shhhhh I won't tell any one, it's just you and me here. (lol)

Yes I do have a scale, but a little camera like this almost certainly weighs less than a pound, so you can just use a small box and some lightweight bubble wrap or peanuts to pack it safely, and it should still be under a pound. You can't ship a bulky item in a flat-rate envelope (it has to be flat), but you can get different shapes of flat-rate boxes (go to usps.com to see them all). But ANY size or shape box under a pound still ships for the same as a small flat-rate box. Problem is, not much fits in those tiny little boxes!

Regarding people who overcharge for shipping ... I think many don't realize they can ship a small item first class (i.e. for three to five stamps). If all they do is look at click-n-ship rates (which are only available for Priority) the minimum is $4.95 (or whatever). Sometimes you can ask a seller to ship for less, explain how to do it, and they will go along.

A LOT of Listia bidders simply won't bid if the shipping is not free (for a small item), and sellers who charge more than a few dollars pay the price in VERY low bids ... it's really not worth "selling" on Listia unless you can get a decent amount of credits for all the effort -- not to mention the item you are giving away. So, I do negotiate with some sellers, particularly new ones who really don't understand the options for shipping, and others I simply ignore ... but if you watch their listings, they often are selling very nice things for under 100 credits because the shipping isn't free .... *shrug* what can you do?

So, don't get mad, just find something else to bid on.

I know, but it obvious these people have been around and $6.50 for a cigarette lighter? that ought to be illegal! Shame on them.

This will probably have to go Priority, but you can probably ship it cheaper by weight--since it won't fit into the small flat-rate box, which is too skinny. Probably doesn't weigh more than a pound packed up, so just use a small box and ship it by weight instead of the flat-rate system. Sometimes it is less expensive to ship by weight than to use a flat-rate, and if you purchase and print your postage online you also get a discount (free delivery confirmation too). Saves about $1 over buying priority shipping and delivery confirmation at the post office.

Hope this helps ... you should be able to ship this for about $5 not insured (but including delivery confirmation, which is all you really need).

OK, how do you ship on line through pay pal or the post office? So you must have a scale? Cause you have to have one to ship on line right? I have just always used priority mail flat rate boxes if over a 1lb . It's too easy! Actually I could put it in the priority mail flat rate envelope. "If it fits it ships" and probably would normally use that. Its just the camera in a case and even bubble wrapped real good it does fit. I think I'll leave that up to the winner.

You know what make me mad about some people on here, they are selling for example a cigarette lighter, and charging $6.50 for shipping! that's bull. I asked about it and they said will it's shipping and HANDLING. They obviously came over here from eBay. I wish everyone would boycott the people who charge for shipping like that. I always try to ship free, but sometimes I just can't. The camera felt kinda heavy and I am a flat rater so that's why I put the medium flat rate box price.

Thanks
