EXCUSE CAMERA FLASH SHOWING UP ON COVER--COVER IS EXCELLENTI
In 1846, Henriette Dulzy-Desportes (Bette Davis), meets kindly Henry Martyn Field (Jeffrey Lynn) on the ship she's taking from England to France, where she becomes governess to the four children of the unhappy Duc de Praslin (Charles Boyer). The Duc's wife (Barbara O'Neil), however, is domineering, neurotic and highly jealous, creating tension in the de Praslin household. As Henriette's compassionate treatment of the children lead them to bloom, it also affects de Praslin, who becomes very fond of Henriette, though they remain only good friends. The Duchesse, however, is convinced of the worst, but de Praslin can't bring himself to end his friendship with Henriette. He joins Henriette and the children at his family estate, and for a while, they're happy--until the Duchesse arrives and insists on firing Henriette, though she promises an all-important letter of recommendation. But the letter is never sent, forcing Henriette into a life of poverty; when de Praslin learns of this, ---well I don't want to give the plot away--Bid some points and find out for yourself.... GOOD MOVIE in GREAT SHAPE! 1940 B&W
