EGYPTIAN WALKING ONION
Ancient Garden Extraordinaire!

While relatively new to Shabby Chic Gardeners; this one-of-a-kind Allium (onion) has been around a long time.
Reasons this onion is phenomenal:
✔It's unique, edible and ornamental.
✔The onions grow on top of the plant.
✔The entire plant from above to below ground is 100% edible!
Purple clustered, rich sweet flavored bulblets sit "atop" a tall hollowed edible stem (taste like a shallot), which is attached to yet another larger and more robust tasting onion underground.
✔ It Walks!
When the marble sized bulbs become to heavy, they pull the top of the plant to the ground which sets a new root and . . . appears as if walking around the garden. To prevent your plant from strolling at will, simply remove the top bulbs.

ZONES: 3+ Very cold hardy. Multiplies and will return every year! (to thin remove onion underground.)
PLANT BULBS: 1" deep in rich compost soil. Keep bulbs cooled and dry until planting. Plant anytime the ground is workable.

First to arrive in Spring and Fast Growing. Harvest when bulbs fully form on top of plant. Eat from the hollowed stems anytime!

Fantastic Starter Gift For The Garden Enthusiast!

ty for the info Dom...I do hope you were able to eat some of them before moving...they're soooo good. Also...to save the mother, simply dig it up and cut off any green stem, then let sun dry and store for the next planting :)

Hi! Do you know about how long it takes to form the top bulbs? Or any cases or conditions in which they don't form? I won an earlier auction from another seller. They grew quickly, but nothing is forming on the top. I'm just wondering if they really were walking onions or not. Thanks! :)

Hmmm...the season is over for this onion and all the action takes place at the top of the stalk. It doesn't produce flowers but little round bulblet onions which end up weighing down the plant and allowing the top onions to take root in another spot...which looks like their walking from season to season. Did it grow long swirling scapes? Also...your zone and planting time may have something to do with it. Either way, you'll know for sure in spring. That said----these are the real deal and my garden will never be without them. It's the only onion I grow because it's truly all that!!!!! Every single bit of it is a delectable edible, including the larger mother under ground. I do recommend good composted soil and full sun.
