Tomatillos (Physalis ixocarpa) are native to central America, aka. Mexican green husk tomato or tomate verde.
These hardy plants produce fruit in a husk. As it matures, the size of the fruit fills the husk causing it to split open. The skin tends to have a sticky, sappy-like coating. Ripening to a pale lemon/gold shade.
Green tomatillos are used for salsa, savoury sauces and soup. Ripe tomatillos are excellent in salads, baked, pickled or eaten fresh.
To grow tomatillos, treat as you would tomatoes. They are hugely prolific and fruit nonstop until frost.
