ABOUT THE AUTHOR: In 1870s Annie Besant already gained notoriety as an estranged Anglican priest's wife. She rejected Christianity & embraced atheism.& was a famous orator who spoke on behalf of Freethought movement, social reform, right to publish information on contraception, improved education, & Fabian socialism. Besant perplexed critics & admirers when, in 1889, she abandoned her atheistic stance & embraced Theosophy. By mid-1890s, Besant made India her home, & was elected second president of Theosophical Society in 1907. In India, Besant' special mission to uplift Hindu self-esteem, which had been severely battered & founded Central Hindu College. She spoke out for social reform, She was elected president of the Indian National Congress in 1918 but lost popularity due to rise of Gandhi. Until end of her life, Besant made popular a young Indian boy, Jiddu Krishnamurti, as the coming World-Teacher/messiah who would bring about a collective human transformation resulting in unity & peace among all peoples. Despite contradictory stages of Besant's life, consistent attempts to discover means by which human suffering could be eliminated. Her books continue to have international impact, & several of are kept in print by Theosophical Publishing House known in the United States as Quest Books. Bescant died in 1933. This book is out of print!
