Description

The listing, Double Hunter 1890 Elgin Pocket Watch has ended.

This 1890 Elgin is housed in a beautiful case. The multi-color rose gold double hunter case features floral (yellow, blue, green and white) machined and geometric decorations and is signed A.L. & Co.(No.10959). On the front there is a nice place for a monogram on the shield.
The White Porcelain dial displays Roman Numerals with spade hands and there is a second dial.
I really don't know much about the movement; the serial numbers gave me the date of the watch, it says ElginNationalWatchCo. in very fancy writing, but it doesn't tell me how man jewels or what kt gold ~tho i am quite sure it is gold.
I would have to say that it's not working now, tho when i hold it there is movement, and the time has actually changed in the time i've spent examining and studying it. I don't know why tho...because I have not even figured out how to wind it yet.
Please ask questions and i'll do my best to answer, and be sure that you want this Pocket Watch Before you bid.
Thank you so much!!

It does pop up, but when i twist it, it only sets the time...if I were too continue to twist, it would keep changing the time. I think I need to pop tit back down and then wind it. The trouble if that it winds for a little bit, and then the MainSpring releases. I think that the MainSpring may need to be replaced--or at the very least need to be cleaned and oiled.
But if you do have more ideas I would love to hear them! I've been reading a lot about them, just because I found so many that my dad was holding onto, but i have very little practical application knowledge. That is so cool that your Grandfather built them!

a gold watch would be stamped how many karats it is and it would be listed how many jewel. hope this helps

Apparently when the mechanism has 7 jewels it is often not mentioned, I read that 15 jewel watches are also often not mentioned, 17 jewel watches are most often mentioned tho...

PitbullProud! I got it to work!! I watched a short video on setting the time, etc... and there was a tiny screw that i tightened...it firmed up the timing. Thanks for the encouraging me! I don't know how long it will work..but it's great to see it moving!

Hmm...I don't think the jewels are missing...as long as i've know it it has not had jewels. I agree that the mechanism usually says how many jewels are in it...I found that odd. Elgin watches usually had a good amount of jewels in the mechanism. I'm not sure if a watch this old would stamp the gold in karats...the watches I've seen up to 1914 have said "Guaranteed for 20 years, or 10 years, and that was how one knew how much gold was in it. (It was usually rolled gold or gold filled.
Those are really good comments tho, and i'll do my best to find the answers. Thanks!

if you wind the knob at the top back and forth it should work and if you hold it to your ear you should be able to hear the ticking sound, watch and see how long it runs and keeps time.

I did figure out that it could be stem set, by pulling the crow until you hear a pop.But when i try to wind it, it winds for a bit, then the spring lets go.
The watch has been sitting for a lot of years, I'm sure it must need to be cleaned and oiled at the least. There may be a part that needs replacing as well, I'm really not sure, but I don't think it's in running condition right now. Thank you for the suggestion tho, I appreciate it!
