Lily of St. Nicholas♥
Pancratium Maritimum
Originating in the Mediterranean, this enchanting coastal Lily is connected to both the Patron Saint Nicholas and the Song of Solomon (2:1).
Spanning both sides of the Mediterranean, this ancient flower has quite the historical past. Closely related to the Rose of Sharon, as well as having grown in the Sharon plain, which today includes the modern edge of Tel Aviv, scholars believe this brilliant white, sand and sun worshiping Lily to be the famous flower mentioned in the Song of Solomon.
Raised in the Mediterranean port of Myra (modern Turkey), St. Nicholas would have grown up among the magically appearing and sweetly scented Lily Maritimum's (meaning, 'of the sea') pictured in his portrait. As an avid lover of the sea, Nicholas also admired its sailors and adopted each as his own brother. Though himself poor, he shared small gifts of food, clothing and most importantly, his respect towards the seamen. In return, you would be hard pressed to find a sailor who does not bear a trinket of the generous priest they called the "Patron Saint of Sailors" whose favorite Lily continues to line the coastal regions along their voyage routes.
Later in time, the good deeds and small presents given by the poor priest would give rise to the two 'winter gift giving characters' of St. Nicholas and Santa Clause.
