This is one of the most overwhelming love stories I have ever seen on film and an echo of a time of war and terrible self-sacrifice. Set in Malaysia during the Japanese occupation, it tells of the strangeness of great bravery & the spiritual mysteries of love & survival to the challenge of life in a later, safer and more ordinary world. As unknown lovers forced apart for years, Brian Brown and Helen Morse's acting is of a pitch of understated emotional strength while Gordon Jackson's archetypal shrewd Scot is perfection. The screenplay is marvellously measured, steely and sparsely worded. The tale unfolds so inexorably that however many times you see it, you still cannot believe the length of the thin thread that fate unravels to its long-unfulfilled conclusion. It is an absolutely brilliant film
