This unusual deep purple tomatillo makes an ideal salsa with its sweet tart flavor. The plant has striking purple veins in the leaves, and the husks are light green to buff colored. Very decorative as a garnish.

I must admit that most of these never really made it too far into a cooked meal. They were so sweet that I added them raw to salsas and salads!

There is some debate as to whether tomatillos are self-pollinating like their tomato cousins. To be sure of the flowers setting fruit, grow at least 2 tomatillo plants. (I did.) Pick the fruits when they fill out their husks and the husks just begin to split.
