you can slice vegetable, fruit, cheese and probably even meat. there is a piece to hold the item in place so your hands are safe from the blade. and a lever to adjust the thickness. they are pretty awesome. if you look up mandolin slicer, sur la table is where i got this one from. you could probably find out even more on their site about it. it has a lot of cool uses and functions.
