How to grow Velvet Queen sunflowers
Pick an area of the garden that gets direct bright, sunlight for at least six hours per day. More sun is better for this heat loving sunflower. Plant sunflower seeds outdoors in early May.
2
Clear weeds, sticks and roots from the planting area and rake the soil flat.
3 Add fertilizer to poor soil. Velvet queen sunflowers generally don't require fertilizer in good soil conditions, but if you need to add a little extra nutrients to the soil, add a 5-10-5 fertilizer. See the directions on the back of the product package for amount and frequency of application.
4
Make holes about the diameter of your index finger and 1/2 inch deep. Space the holes in groups of three of four with 2 to 3 inches of space between planting holes. Space groups 2 feet apart.
5
Drop one seed into each planting hole and cover with 1/2 inch of soil.
6
Soak the area with water until it is damp to the bottom of each planting hole. Water whenever the top of the soil begins to feel dry to the touch.
7
Pull all but the strongest seedlings from each group when the seedlings are 4 inches tall. This will leave individual plants spaced 2 feet apart.
8
Remove the plants at the end of the season. Velvet Queen sunflowers are annuals that need to be replanted from seed each spring.
