Description

The listing, Mystery Monkey Monday is Back! Vintage/Antique Ivory-Colored Necklace Made of ??? has ended.

A couple of months ago I started "Mystery Monkey Monday" when I listed a brooch with an odd monkey on it. I mean to to follow this with other mystery items, but I haven't done so. Here is the second MMM installment, and I hope some of you can enlighten me as to what this necklace is made of.

Here is a vintage to antique necklace made up of ivory-colored disks. The disks appear to be fused together with the string on the inside. At first I thought was Bakelite but no such luck. Then I thought it was celluloid...maybe, but I don't think so. Next I thought the necklace was made of some other more ordinary modern plastic. Possibly, but the discs are very hard, almost like stone. There's only one other possibility that I can think of: Bone. The disks have a subtle texture to them, and some have odd coloration.

So, I will leave it up to you to determine what this necklace is made of. All I know is that it looks great on. It's nothing much to look at just sitting on a table, but it kind of comes alive when worn. It is 17.5" long and the disks are 5/8" in diameter.

Any input about this odd necklace will be much appreciated. Of course free shipping to Listia-verified addresses. From a smoke-free home (we do have a couple of pups, but I don't let them wear the jewelry ;-)

Great piece, any idea how old this necklace is? I collect bone ivory items. And also some French ivory and alabaster.

It's great to hear from you!! I don't really know the age of the necklace. If I could figure out the material, I think it would tell me the age. I'm hopeful that some of the other Listians out there can give me a clue. Happy New Year!!!

But it is hard to tell. There is imitation ivory also. It is really hard to tell. The only real way to tell is the acid test. But if it's imitation it would leave an orange stain

I bought a letter opener I swore was ivory but it was imitation ivory. It even passed the hot needle test. Now I have a little orange spot on the handle

Thank you for all of you comments! I still don't know exactly what the necklace is made of, but I am really leaning toward plastic made to look like ivory. Each disk is two pieces glued? together, and I don't think that ivory would be treated that way. I just don't know.
