Description

The listing, Scarlet Sage – 50+ seeds! has ended.

Winner will receive over 50 seeds, harvested locally. These plants are totally easy to grow and naturally attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

Scarlet sage or Blood Sage or ‘Salvia coccinea’ flowers are a velvety red and naturally attract hummingbirds and butterflies (but not deers!) This species does well right through the hottest weather, with or without water, tolerating drought. Scarlet Sage prefer well-draining soil and does best in full sun or mostly sunny locations, but will do OK with intermittent shade. This is a perennial in warmer climates and an annual where winter temperatures stay below freezing for more than a few hours at a time.
Scarlet sage reach 2-3 feet tall with bite-sized showy red flowers about an inch long, arranged in loose whorls along the upright stem and bloom continuously from early summer to first frost.

I skillfully collected these seeds myself over the past couple months, and now I’d love to give some away!

Happy bidding! :)

This sage is not only just good to eat, it has some of what I consider to be extremely good in health benefits!. It is a valuable culinary spice but also is great for all types of sore throats, you can make poultices from the leaves to combat swelling from insect bits or poison ivy and other plants/leaves that cause itching and swelling. It is used for treatments in hot flashes, asthma, colds, fevers, menstrual cramps, denture problems, absesses, general nervousness, eczema, psoriasis, it enhances the immune system. Every home should have this (among other herbs) to combat many problems and help people to become less dependent on physicians. A little research in herbs will surprise you on what you can use these for BUT make sure it is a reputable site....there are some that are, lets just say not completely on the up and up.

TY so much for sharing this information! I'd read a bit about Scarlet Sage benefits, but haven't found the time to invest in experimenting with it - it's a relatively new herb for me, I love it's unique scent!
Knowledge is power - I concur!! I can't agree more with information from reputable sites, especially on the internet when anyone can blog off nonsense on anything. ;)
Cheers! :D

Also...forgot to ask...would you consider offering these in the spring? I am trying to get enough credits for a particular item on Lista and I won't have the credits. I can never have enough of this plant and didn't collect the seeds the last couple of years and should start over again with new seed. Thanks.

bluespirtartist - I don't forsee offerings in the spring being a problem. In addition to a nice seed harvest I have in a dry, cool, dark place, I recently started a few plants myself that I'm sure will have spent a few blooms by spring. ;) No worries!
Cheers!

Nice link mycozym! As I've said, I haven't done anything culinary with Scarlet Sage myself. Reading your link information, I do believe, fairly firmly, Edible Sage as in "Common sage is a culinary herb used as pork and poultry seasoning" is referring to the sage we all know and love (purple flowers , entity cleansing, etc.). I can imagine scarlet sage in my tea, but I can't in the oven with my bird of choice. Anyone with a different opinion - please share! :D

for the teas do you think they need to be dried leaves and dried flowers or fresh

Again, I hesitate to give first hand advice on culinary scarlet sage advice because I haven't experimented myself.... imho I'd imagine you would use the flowers - basing my opinion on the scent I could fully imagine drinking as tea. Mmm, dried or fresh, I've never used fresh herbs in tea, only dried, So..... I'm hoping a knowledgeable Listian might chime in with advice?
