Description
The listing, Handcarved Shell Cameo Lady with Corsage 18x13mm Sterling Silver has ended.
I took raw sea shell Cassia Rufa and I hand cut it to 18x13mmm. Then I hand carved the lady and decided to liven her up a bit by leaving some color in her hair and a corsage on her dress. All cameos are made right here in USA and all sterling silver is USA made and nickel free. As one of the few American cameo carvers I hope you can enjoy my work.
18x13mm signed by me on the back.
Each cameo comes with a choice of 16" or 18" chain
Questions & Comments
Great work! I was curious to know Tad, what tools are you using to carve the shell as it is very brittle, do you have to cook the shell prior carving? I carve avocado pits for now until I can graduate to something more tideous.
no cooking or soaking in water I rough out the shapes with rotary diamond engraving bits then I use hand gravers and put in detailing. the cutting of the shell to shape and the rest is done on a lapidary wet slab saw but the rest is done by hand. Always wear masks for dusts when using power tools and shell and some shell is extremely poisonous so be sure of what you carve.
Abalone is one of b the worst, because the dust can cut your lungs up. I like your carving. I am from Metlakatla, Alaska, the only Indian reservation in Alaska. I carve wood and ivory. My uncle Stanly Marsden, master carver known worldwide for carving Healing Heart Totem pole. Many carvers on our island and Craig. After Stan Marsden lost his son to a cocaine overdose, he was at first incapacitated by grief, but a year later Stan, who is an Alaskan Tsimpsean wood carver, decided to create a totem pole in his son's memory. Before he was done, the pole had become a communal project, with the entire town of Craig taking part. Carved from the Heart intertwines the process of carving and erecting the Healing Heart totem pole with the participants' stories of personal loss, grief, substance abuse, suicide and violence. My wife loves cameos. Good size too.
Thank you for sharing carving and sculpting are just part of my every day like breathing. I understand too the great loss of a child. I have lost 2. I spent some time on the Hopi second mesa as a very young child I ran away from the campground and my parents and refused to tell anyone my name so they could take me home . I was there for only a little over a month but they taught me about my spirit and strength to survive through anything. Eventually my parents reported me missing and the Hopi family I stayed with were sorry the y could not keep me from returning to harm. A communal spirit is something very few outsiders can even begin to comprehend. Hugs to you and all you love. I will be offering more of my carvings here larger ones. I am losing my eyesight from cataracts so my pictures are not so good, but I will carve I will never give up. Be well my friend.
Yes I do but Listia does not allow us to post other sales areas I have an Etsy store and my own website. Currently I have very few cameos for sale as I lost my studio in 2012 to a house fire I will be carving again as we get our new home hopefully this year. You can always find me through Facebook I am a public figure there https://www.facebook.com/Pick4Art
You and I have the death of 2 children in common also. My wife and I lost both of our daughters and almost lost Steven Jr. from Hodgkin's cancer. I also grew up in an abusive home. My brother and I used to hide in the cemetery from my father. Sometimes my sisters hid us in the attic. I am a Lead Lineman.
I was almost blind from cataracts, but had surgery in December. Right eye one Tuesday and left eye the following Tuesday. I can see vibrant colors now.
I have other issues medically have to get them in check and they son;t see it as severe enough yet though it blocks my vision causes fogginess left eye is the worst. I will just keep using magnification until I can get medical care my insurance is a joke
