Description

The listing, Vintage Antique German Hair Holder Victorian Era has ended.

This is a Victoria Era Hair Holder. Ladies during that time would put the hair from their brush into this bowl and keep. Lots of crafts were made with hair back during that time. This is marked Germany on the bottom and looks like a date or a number which I cannot read. The flowers are hand painted and the accompanying plate it sits on all are in excellent condition. Do not see any cuts, chips or cracks at all.

I have a hair pin holder from that same era listed and the two really look nice together. Don't know if they were meant to go together but look like they might have.

This set measures 2" tall by 10" wide in circumference around the bowl. The plate measures 5 7/8". I don't see any marking on the bottom of the plate.

You could use for cotton balls.

Many things were made of human hair and also, Hair, nail parings etc, were commonly kept and burned .. for fear of being hexed with it.. silly but its what they thought

Yes that era was a very supernatural era, all the way into the early 1900's, they were experimenting with spirits and there was a lot of paranormal activity as well. Interesting era.

Hair was used in hand quilting and embroidery. The engaged woman would use her fiances' hair in the wedding quilt she worked on. The idea was that she had to have one quilt done for her age ,if she was 18, then 18 quilts completed if she was to have a happy marriage. Sewing his hair and her hair in the quilt bonded them together for eternity. The human hair is naturally very strong and lasted forever.

During the victorian era there were some very interesting things with hair done. All the crafts that were made. Even when someone died, they cut the hair of the deceased, and made wreathes, and other things with the hair. Kind of bizarre, but interesting.
