Description
The listing, Chinese Lanturn Seeds has ended.
This is a delicate looking vine that grows quickly and has tiny white flowers that turn into little lanterns when mature, I like to pop the lanterns like bubble wrap. lol The seeds are in the lanterns. Very unusual. I have this climbing my pouch column. Very unique. Thank you.
Questions & Comments
There are some varieties which produce edible berries - also called Chinese Lantern. Do you have any of those?
I think they grow wild here. They look like a weed instead of a vine. I never tried to save the seeds because they are in the berry and I'm not sure how to harvest them. How would you cook them?
I was told that they are essentially small tomatillos, or, tiny eggplants, so, basically the same ways - hot, sweet chutney, curried, etc. Some people simmer them into jams, or, use them in pot pie, and, casserols. Even, pured in omlets!
I need to try that. If I can harvest seeds I will send you some. I will make a note to contact you nest Fall. If you are interested and don't hear from me just send me a reminder. I always wondered if they were edible but was afraid to try Thanks.
Most embers of the "Nightshade" family have edible fruits. It's the rest of the plant you can't eat. Even the miscalled Deadly Nightshade produces edible berries - when they are fully ripe (deep purple/black). After all, they are closely related to tomatoes, and, every variant of those are edible. As are all peppers, egg plants, and potato. In fact, most potatoes produce seed pods which are edible when green(well cooked!). They are much like geen beans, just smaller.
