As far as I know it is just a USB that connects to one computer, not all of them. Sorry

Supposedly, I go outside to use my laptop on the porch swing and have this USB thingy plugged in my computer hard drive on the desk - will it work that way? What's the distance range in feet or yards?

I am not sure, I just put it in and it worked. But if so, you can download it if you need to.

so if i have wifi, but the internet doesn't work on my computer, then this will fix that? or is it a router?

Yes, that is correct. If you have wifi in the house, but your pc isn't wifi capable, this will allow your computer to connect to wifi. I used it on my xp desktop until i started a job from home, which required me to hardline to the internet, no wifi allowed.
