The listing, VHS "SHOW BOAT", HOWARD KEEL,MISSISSPPI GAMBLER, AVA GARDNER KATHRYN GRAYSON MAJOR,MUSICAL HIT! has ended.
1951 George Sidney's SHOW BOAT is exceptionally done. The opening scene alone will make you want to get up and sing along. The music of Jerome Kern, and Hammerstein !! as well as the storyline brings much enjoyment to the film. Kathryn Grayson (Nora Hawks) and Howard Keel (Gaylord Ravenal) headline the film, and the movie revolves around their musical partnership as well as what happens offstage. Nora, who later takes the stage name "Magnolia", falls for Gaylord, a Mississippi gambler who happens to sing. Their partnership is somewhat storybook, but is not the case. Gaylord's gambling becomes a problem, which eventually breaks-up both their professional and personal partnership. Joe E. Brown (Cap'n Andy Hawks) nearly steals the show during the New Year's Eve scene as he continuously blares out, "Happy New Year," while William Warfield's rendition of "Old Man River" is riveting and powerful.
SHOW BOAT sails down the lazy Mississippi during the post-Civil War period. The film does not concentrate too much on the miseries of the South, but happens to lightly touch upon" miscegenation" that occurred in American society during the nineteenth century and was much frowned upon.... Julie LaVerne(Ava Gardner) is accused of having Negro and Caucasian blood, and as a result, she is forced to leave the Show Boat in order to save the show!! Can you imagine!! After that scene, we do not hear from Julie again until near the end of the film where she is unfortunately and ironically portrayed as a fallen star that gains comfort with alcohol, etc,.
Overall, SHOW BOAT will delight anyone interested in Broadway musicals that have been given the Hollywood treatment. There's plenty of glorious numbers in care of the Kern-Hammerstein songwriting team, and the choreography scenes brought to you by Marge & Gower Chamion So if you want to hear "Make Believe" or "Can't Help Lovin' That Man," check out this.BEAUTIFUL MUSICAL, ONE OF THE VERY BEST!
