Description

The listing, Rare Red Sacred Lotus Seed has ended.

This auction is for three Red Sacred Lotus seeds that have been harvested this season (2011) from my private collection.

The Lotus (Nelumbo Nucifera) symbolizes purity, beauty, majesty, grace, fertility, wealth, richness, knowledge and serenity.

Lotus plants are easy to grow and have done well for me in a small trough. Lotus are hardy up to Zone 5. The lotus flower can be successfully grown in "tubs" in or around your pond. Large containers will work as well. Just be sure to keep them wet, and by wet the professionals mean VERY wet. Usually there should be at least two inches of water above the ground soil in which you plant your lotus flower. They love the soil, however they are very thirsty plants,

It is important to protect the roots from freezing Once the plants are started. They can winter over in the pond if the pond depth is below the freeze line for your area. Late in the fall, the yellowed foliage should be cut off and the plant lowered to the deepest part of the pond. Or you may lift the tubers after the plant has died back in the fall. If you lift the tubers, store them in a cool, frost-free location until late spring. To help prevent mildew and rotting, store them in living sphagnum moss. Where I live it is warm enough just to leave them in there containers to over winter.

There is a wide selection of sites on the web to show you step by step instructions on how to get the most out of your plants. These can be planted in a large pot or in a pond.

Thank you for looking at this auction and may the beauty of this plant inspire you to give it a loving home.

They are truly wonderful plants and the flowers have a wonderful scent that spreads throughout my garden. I was so happy when my Friend from India sent me the first seeds and I was able to grow them for myself. I have been growing the mother plants now going on 6 years.

They love the sun and need a good 5-6 hours of full sun to bloom well . I don't think you would have a problem setting them out in the spring and then taking them in for the winter. The plants I have get ice over the water but never freeze down to their roots or rhizomes. You can " lift" them and wash the rhizomes clean of soil and store them in a cool dark place until it warms back up. I do know that some people put make shift green houses with artificial lighting and heat in the winter.

These plants can also get very large in height and with. I do not know if you would want them taking up that much of your personal home space. :)

They definitely draw attention. I have people who will stop, get out of their vehicles, and walk into my yard to take photographs of the Lotus or even just converse about them.
