Furcraea quicheensis Mecate A magnificent Furcraea that forms a stocky trunk to 2 m (7 ft.) tall which holds up to 100 broad, glaucous, minutely toothed, Agave-like leaves in an upright rosette to 2.5 m (8 ft.) in diameter. Native to the highlands of Quiche and Huehuetenango in southwestern Guatemala and the Sierra del Soconusco in southernmost Chiapas, Mexico, it is found at altitudes of 2000 to 3300 m (6600 to 11000 ft.) where it grows in pine and oak forests on volcanic soils. It prefers mild temperate climates and can take light to moderate freezes. Due to its high altitude origin it will succeed even in areas with very cool summers. Hello are these plants slow or fast growing? I live in Canada near the N Y border. Could I start the seeds indoors for the winter and then keep in a pot for outdoors in the spring, summer and fall. Our spring is cool to warm and the summer can be crazy hot and humid. I have never grown such a plant like this before, and if it got too much out of control or large, then I would donate it to a mall or something. LOL
