Furcraea quicheensis Mecate A magnificent Furcraea that forms a stocky trunk to 2 m (7 ft.) tall which holds up to 100 broad, glaucous, minutely toothed, Agave-like leaves in an upright rosette to 2.5 m (8 ft.) in diameter. Native to the highlands of Quiche and Huehuetenango in southwestern Guatemala and the Sierra del Soconusco in southernmost Chiapas, Mexico, it is found at altitudes of 2000 to 3300 m (6600 to 11000 ft.) where it grows in pine and oak forests on volcanic soils. It prefers mild temperate climates and can take light to moderate freezes. Due to its high altitude origin it will succeed even in areas with very cool summers.
