The listing, Hand carved vintage sewing keep has ended.

Old vintage wooden sewing keeper for needles, yarn, string. 4 inches tall, 1 3/4 inches diameter. Unsure is any piece is missing from top portion.

I saw one like this in an antique store and the lady said they would place the spool of thread jn there and the hole was where the thread came out. She said it protected the thread from unraveling around if dropped.
They weren't popular and are rare.
I had thought it was a darned egg missing the handle but she said no and corrected me.
