Description

The listing, Rat-Tail cactus (5 starts) has ended.

The Aporocactus flagelliformis (rat tail cactus) has thin stems (usually about a 1/4" in diameter) that can grow five feet long and hang down over the sides of its pot.

The stems are covered with short, reddish brown spines. The two to three inch long red flowers can last for several days.

The rat tail cactus needs bright light and coarse heavy soil with excellent drainage. Drench and let dry, but water more sparingly during the winter. Air that is too dry can encourage red spider; air that is too moist can encourage rot.

In winter, keep the plants cold and dry to encourage blooming. Mine has grow to 4' long, and is very pretty when in bloom!

Well, I am thinking, since the start can be 4" long, there can be 5 of them wrapped together ot one end, then placed in a damp paper towel, inside a zip-lock bag, inside a bubble envelope. Sound right?

It seems where I have trimmed them before, 2 start out of the cut, so I have many that start as 1 and become 2.

They are very prickly,,so you will want to wear gloves when planting

My aunt says to dont keep changing the pot size, this is to promote longer growth. The soil is just dirt from the ground, not potting soil. They seem to need a harder soil.

The damp paper towel might not be a good idea. Cacti can be shipped bare root, or just as cuttings. They need time to callous over before being started.

yes, a damp towel will not work. They will be cuttings, that will be cut at time of shipping, so they may be calloused over by the time you get them.

I have always watered everything I have from the bottom, I make sure I have a tray or bowl to sit the plants in, before hanging them.

I had looked in the store and never found it. I got this one from my aunt, when she moved into an assisted living apartment.
