No, I think your correct. Theres no way you would know without knowing exactly when he bought it, so you can look up what firmeware version they were on. If it was purchased a while ago, 2 years or longer, this is only for an ipod touch or classic. Not all work for both. If it was purchased within the last 24 months, it could work with ipad, touch, or classic, all at the same time, or just for one of those. Theres no way to know for sure because of all the 3rd party vednors making these. Do you know around when you got this? If you have an ipod touch AND an ipad 2, which I do, then you pretty much win either way. The older firmware, i believe it was 3.2, was the last time you could use the older rca cable model, after that the firmware made only the audio work and they blocked the video. You have to get one that has been made and works with all firmwares, or 3.3 or later. If you search on ebay you can see what i mean, the two types. If this is 3.3 or later, or all firmwares, its a good score. IT really just depends on when you bought it, seeing how we dont have any model names or numbers to go off of. If you know the exact month/year you bought it, I can look it up for you and tell you what this works with, more or less.

Honestly I don't know. I'm not sure which ones it supports. I got it from ebay and never used it. Came with out any instructions. Thanks for the question!

looks like it connects to the charging/docking port and connects to anything with the correct outlets.

I just looked it up, it's for iPad 1g iPhone 1g iPod touch 1g and 2g iPod classic iPod video. looks like it's for older iPods. (luckily I have an iPod touch 2g)
