American ginseng is native to many states, east of the Mississippi River, in the United States. It prefers a cool, temperate climate and is only found in the mountainous regions of the Southern states. It also grows naturally in the Eastern provinces of Canada. Ginseng is a tender perennial. The first frosts of fall kill the leafy top, but a new top grows up the following spring, from an underground bud on the perennial root.
