Description

The listing, EMBOSSED EGG WITH GREAT GIN BONUS has ended.

Up for bid is a beautiful hand decorated duck egg that through research have found it to be at least 50 years old, it's enameled in a lovely violet and blue checked pattern along the top, flowers that look like iris's between a diamond pattern. There are the traditional two holes on the bottom as this was how the egg was emptied without cracking the egg. The whole egg is outlined with a raised gold braid. There is a heart inside a box found towards the base of the egg and I'm not sure of the purpose but I can say that I had a pear shaped music box that had similar gold braiding and was from the San Francisco Music Box Co. and I tried calling them to get some history on the heart in the box but even though the name of the company is still used, the company sold to its current owners a long time ago and nobody knew the history. They thought that it could be a signature trademark of the creator of the design.

On to the GIN BONUS - I am including the pink frosted cup for anyone who uses the gin. I got this several years ago at an estate sale and all I was told was that it was over 75 years old. I can't verify the age because I can't find another one like it. It's very unique in its shape as the lip on the outside of the cup doesn't change the shape on the inside which is all straight and smooth. It appears that the glass was hand blown because it has a bubble in the glass. There are some minor signs of its age but for being half a century, I think it's in pretty good shape! If nobody accepts the gin it will go back on my hutch with my other Spring pink glassware!

Here's how it goes:

The processed used to create the egg is called cloisonné. Chinese and Japanese were the first to use this process but with a smooth surface. This style of cloisonné is similar to the Russian highly doubt a real egg was used to produce this. The holes in the bottom were mostly likely made so that when the enamel was fired in the kiln the egg would not explode from the high tempatures and pressure for expanding hot air used to melt the enamel. It is one of the nicer twisted wire pieces I have seen. Good luck with the bids.
