The name 'Republica de Venezuela' replaced 'Estados Unidos de Venezuela' on all coinage from 1953. Bolivar fractionals and multipules continued to be silver until 1965, at which point they became nickel in composition.
Shown is a 1989 two bolivares, composition nickel-clad steel. The obverse features the portait of Simon Bolivar, recognized as liberator of the Venezuelans from rule by the Spanish. The portrait was designed by Albert Barre in Paris. The reverse features the coat of arms, denomination, and date. This variety has large letters on the side featuring the coat of arms.
